When it comes to great food cities, most people think of New York City or other metro areas on the coasts, such as Los Angeles, Boston, or New Orleans.
As both Martha Stewart and Guy Fieri (stars of the Food Network) know, however, there’s great food to be enjoyed all across the United States. One city that has a cuisine that both stars love is Reno, Nevada.
How Fieri discovered Reno
Fieri fell in love with the cuisine of Reno when he went there to shoot a segment for his hit television show Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. While he was there, he visited several local hot spots.
One place he visited was the locally renowned Louis Basque Corner. Basque is known for its savory and hearty meat recipes. Fieri chowed down on classic Basque specialties that locals enjoy on a regular basis, such as their lamb dish.
After his visit the TV chef gave the city’s food two thumbs up, and was more than glad to recommend that visitors and locals alike make excursions to enjoy the restaurant offerings in the Reno area.
And then along came Martha
If Fieri’s endorsement wasn’t enough, highly acclaimed homemaking personality Martha Stewart has also given props to Reno recipes. Admittedly, Stewart takes a vastly different approach to food than Fieri.
While he travels from city to city to find the best food that local restaurants can serve, Stewart is much more known for her own cooking talents and passing on recipes that she loves to others who may be interested in trying them.
Some of her specialties just happen to include dishes that are quite similar to the ones Fieri found and raved about on Reno menus.
Martha Stewart’s oxtail recipe echoes a Basque offering
While Stewart’s website offers a number of Caribbean-inspired oxtail recipes, it also provides recipes such as Braised Oxtail with Jerk Mix, which involves a similar taste and texture to the servings that are so popular in Reno.
The beefy and savory stew that Martha’s recipe creates certainly gives a nod toward the same sources of inspiration for the spice-loving residents of the northwestern Nevada deserts.
Stewart’s own take on Reno-based lamb recipes
The lamb that Fieri fell in love with at Louis Basque Corner is a staple in the Reno area. Heavily influenced by the flavorful seasonings that are included in meat recipes in Reno, Martha Stewart published a recipe that contains a unique blend of herbs to bring out a flavor that greatly resembles Nevada’s favorites.
She also offers instructions and tips for how to achieve the fine balance between crispy and juicy that her Food Network colleague raved about on his show.
When it comes to great food, Food Network stars agree: You don’t have to go any further than your own kitchen. Just as New York offers great bagels or Boston boasts of superb seafood, Reno has its specialties that attract foodies from far and wide.
Eating well shouldn’t be difficult or expensive, and these two professional gourmets offer their tips and tricks for making that Reno dream your home reality!
