Beating illiteracy one cake at a time

Celebrity chef James Martin of BBC’s Saturday Kitchen has lent his culinary reputation to a good cause: literacy. He went to Morpeth, England to encourage thousands to develop their reading skills and enrol in a free course.

“Cooking demonstrates how numeracy and literacy skills are needed for everyday tasks, requiring people to be able to read recipes, count out and weigh ingredients, half or quarter recipes and convert from imperial to metric,” says the news site.

Best teen chef

Starting them young, aren’t we? A Georgia student won the award for best Teen Chef .

Jonathan Miller won a full tuition scholarship worth more than $48,000 to at The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Atlanta. We’ll watch for his name in a couple of years — he could be the next generation of celebrity chefs.

The culinary industry is a male-dominated world, with very few women able to break the glass ceiling and actually become head chef. The organization Women Chef and Entrepreneurs hope to recognize the few (but proud) female pioneers. They recently ran a Celebrating Women Chefs competition.
